Example Lessons
Here are a few examples of lessons and activities that I plan to cover in this class:
- Drawing proportions, tips for measuring with your eye or with your pencil and transferring it to a drawing. Also object placement on your paper.
- Adding value and depth to drawings. We will be doing a lot of practice with basic shading, adding highlights, midtones, and shadows. How to color light and dark. I will introduce students to different shades of graphite pencils and let them practice drawing with them. We will also practice shading and layering with colored pencils. Project examples might be similar to these:
-Practice drawing on different types and colors of paper with charcoal, chalk, and colored pencil.
-Talk about negative spaces and have them draw a sillhouette, something similar to this:
-Discuss perspective and do projects similar to these:
We will also do some fun activities like drawing cartoons, patterns, etc.....
We might even have some fun adding depth to letters like this artist
For many lessons I plan to have a fairly simple drawing project, and a similar but more challenging project for those kids who are a little more experienced with drawing. I may have a free day once a month where kids can draw whatever they want and I will help them and give them ideas and tips.

New! Hoping to Offer a Basic Drawing Class
Starting
this fall or possibly next spring, I would like to offer a class for kids who are interested in
learning and exploring basic drawing skills and techniques.
The class will be held in my home and will most likely be for children ages 8-13. If there is enough interest in the class, I would like to divide into two classes according to age. I am hoping to keep class sizes at about 8-10 students.
The class will be $24 a month for once-weekly classes (I'm thinking Thursdays, from 4:00-4:50pm?). I will most likely charge a one-time $10 fee for art supplies at the start of each year.
Topics covered will be as follows:
Practice with different mediums like graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, pen, watercolor pencil, markers, etc....
Practice drawing perspective, highlights/shadows, negative spaces, patterns, blending colors, stipple, etc...
Our subjects will vary from still life, landscapes, abstract, cartoons, portraits, and more.
For more information, please contact me at 723-2809, or email me at portraitsbymel@gmail.com
